about

Joseph Haydn is considered the father of the string quartet, with 68 finally judged to be authentic, these punctuating his creative career over a quarter-century. In order to pay an original and vibrant tribute to Haydn, the Pražák Quartet proposes three of the most ‘modern’ of them.

First, the 6th of the ‘Sonnen-Quartette’ (Sun Quartets) so-named due to the Masonic star that decorated the flyleaf of Hummel’s original Berlin edition in 1772 and helped sell that ‘instalment’; a youthful opus but one of the boldest. Then the Lark Quartet of 1790, best known and most subtly balanced of all. And finally the Emperor, the last model of the genre dated 1797, which would be adopted by the young Beethoven as well as by Schubert. An hour of music and a summary, amongst others that might be possible, of the history of the modern string quartet.
