about

Mozart’s divertimenti, cassations, serenades (‘evening music’), night music and other ‘gallant’ works are compositions comprising four to seven movements (Gran Partita K. 361), which respect the sonata form in the opening and closing movements and were intended for various circumstances of social and worldly life.

Thus linked to events of society life, they were usually written in response to a commission from important Court figures, nobles, patrons or friends of Mozart. One has tended to attach little importance to this ‘utility’ music. A number of them however refine the ‘worldly’ aspect and, like the famous Little Night Music, enhance the entertainment element to a degree that it would never attain again.
