about

"Composed in early 1876, the String Quartet No. 8 Op. 80 was premiered on 29 December 1890 in Berlin by the Joachim Quartet. Originally marked as opus 27, it was written shortly after finishing the Piano Trio in G minor Op. 26, and before the beginning of the sketchings for the Stabat Mater Cantata. The recent loss of Antonín Dvořák’s second son is apparent in his work, which, like the Stabat Mater and the Piano Trio, is sad and nostalgic. Although officially written in major, its themes are often presented in minor keys. In the same spirit, The Quartet No. 9 in D minor Op. 34 is, without a doubt, one of the most intimate testimonies of its composer. Finished in December 1877, its music speaks of the shock caused by the loss of his two other first children. Although the second movement contains glimpses of folk revelry, as a whole it remains melancholic, wistfully meditative, with an even dream-like atmosphere and refined elegance. The work is dedicated to Johannes Brahms, unfailing support of the Bohemian composer, in gratitude for his patronage and recommendation for a state stipend.
