about

“Archetype of the romantic interpreter of the 19th century - he was a renowned violinist in Germany -, Ludwig Spohr (1784-1859) was also, as a composer, a great admirer of the Viennese classics, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.

Yet it is Schubert and Mendelssohn that one will think of above all when listening to these two compositions from 1813 and 1814: the nonet for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, violin, viola, cello and double bass, and the octet for clarinet, two horns, two violas, cellos and double bass. Schubert for the wind/string mixture, so subtly accomplished in his octet but nicely successful here too; Mendelssohn for the spring freshness that shakes these pages like those of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” (Nicolas Blanmont, La Libre Belgique)
