"Roussel’s chamber music achieves an unprecedented balance between the refinement of colours and rhythmic clarity, a side usually masked in the too-rare anthologies devoted to it. The ‘piquant’ harmony of the subtle Sérénade Op. 30, a ‘symphony of the light caprice’ in Roland-Manuel’s words, must be played without blurring the prodigious energy propelling it. The Divertissement Op. 6, a relatively early score, plays with the woodwinds’ interlaced lines and irresistible syncopation, which will be remembered by his unexpected pupil Bohuslav Martinů. Towards the end of his life, Roussel wrote a Trio thoroughly classical in structure but with the inexhaustible melodic verve of his Bohemian student. The Duo is only an occasional piece, but not the Impromptu for harp, which exudes a diffuse orientalism. The finale of the incidental music for Le Marchand de sable qui passe, poetic and serious, develops one of the most moving melodies penned by the composer of Bacchus et Ariane.
