about

“Zdeňka and Martin Hršel restore the tradition of the great established duos, and not of occasional encounters… of prestige. This joint work allows them to deepen both the serial harmony of Opus 38 by Schönberg and the Ravelian impulses of Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances. The centerpiece of the program is naturally the first world recording of The Isle of the Dead. (…)

The Prague Duo enchants us with the horological development of a formidable 5/8 rhythm, purifying the brassy masses, preserving the narrative aspect with a ‘surgical’ use of the pedal. The Symphonic Dances - whose piano score is by the composer’s hand - further exploit the need to immediately seduce the listener. The disordered ardor of some performers had almost made us forget the necessary rhythmic regularity of the set-up, which alone allowed to bring out all the flavor (small harmony) of popular hints (saxophone) and mystical quotations (religious harmonizations). Admire the Tempo di valse of the second Dance, this game of ping-pong without equivalent in the discography. ‘In addition’, one could say, the Second Suite, experienced as a double concerto. Splendid recital.” (Stéphane Friederich, Classica)
