about

The present programme proposes four rarely performed chamber works of ‘pure fantasy’ by Robert Schumann (1810-1856), in their original instrumentation. First of all, a ‘trio idea’, sketched out beginning of December 1842 but not completed and published until 1850, under the title of Phantasiestücke Op. 88, the first escape for standard forms. Next comes the Andante and Variations, scored for an unusual quintet consisting of two pianos, two cellos and horn and blending his favourite keyboards with the ‘mysterious voices’ of the horn and/or cellos.

The two other works are Märchen (generally translated as ‘fairy-tales’ and ‘fantasy pieces’, perfect symbols in German romanticism) without words: the Adagio and Allegro Op. 70 juxtaposes a poetic, moving nocturne and a brilliant rondo showing off to advantage the modern three-valve horn in F, while the Fünf Stücke im Voltston Op. 102 dated from 1849 creates - for the very first time - a dialogue between cello and keyboard, one the bard of Lieder with its intimate, reserved tone, the other bringing a folk-like touch with its accompaniment suggesting stylized dances.
