about

Three of the six Piano Trios totally written by Mozart during the summers of 1786 and 1788 and probably intended for his fellow-Mason Michael Puchberg. The genre was in full expansion in Vienna owing to the growing vogue of the pianoforte, which was occurring in middle-class as well as aristocratic drawing rooms. Mozart nudged the simple ‘Sonata with accompaniment’ into oblivion, proposing a new balance, especially in the Trio No. 4 in E major, which Chopin frequently played in concert.
