about

With Fritz Reiner, Georg Solti and Ferenc Fricsay, George Szell (1897-1970) is one of those great Hungarian conductors who deeply influence the art of conducting in the twentieth century. As a Jewish, he left Europe in 1939 for the United States, where he had a brilliant career. With the Cleveland Orchestra, which he conducted from 1946 until his death in 1970, he achieved transparency and clarity, as well as an obsessive sense of precision and detail. He achieved the same level of perfection as the Concergebouw in Amsterdam, the Wiener Philharmoniker or the Leningrad Philharmonic.
