Pianists such as Artur Schnabel, Wilhelm Kempff, Alfred Brendel and Murray Perahia today have proffered perfectly acceptable renderings of these sonatas, whose form so frustrated Schubert that he invented fantasies, impromptus, Klavierstück and moment musical to satisfy his urge for self-expression. With Svjastoslav Richter, the peremptory brevity of the contrasts and the sensation of free harmonies in the andantes and adagios dissolve the four-part structure, focusing on the spirituality of the minuet rather than the traditional scherzo from 1826 onwards. Quite an accomplishment, this Russian pianist tackling ‘Viennese’ music!
