about

A tribute to legendary conductor Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) who introduced ‘serious’ music to the world of television and made waves back in 1965 by performing Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony, and even producing two recordings of it. Habeneck introduced Beethoven’s momentous 5th Symphony to Paris in 1819, and Karajan produced a memorable performance in Aachen in 1932.

It has since become the most frequently played symphony in the world, today rivalled only by Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony. Juxtaposing these two compelling ‘pronouncements’ (which are no longer either politically or artistically provocative) serves to bring two worlds closer: namely one of freedom, courage and Haydn-like military discipline imbued with a sense of fraternity, a hymn to the glory of Mankind, in anticipation of Beethoven’s Ninth; and the other a tableau of tragedy, despair, terror and violence culminating in a brief moment of triumph. Since first performed by Mravinsky in 1953, the latter has taken on a disquieting universal significance and an aura of grandeur.
