about

Like Lionel Tertis in the past and Kim Kashkashian later, Josef Suk recorded the complete Sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord BWV 1027-1029 on the viola, with his partner of more than thirty years, Zuzana Ružicková (revealed in the West by her recordings for Erato). Pablo Casals was the first to always perform these works on the cello, just like Paul Tortelier; gambists like Anner Bylsma, Wieland Kuijken or Jodri Savall have reverted to the period instrument whereas others have had a go with the lute, Baroque oboe or violoncello piccolo. The Sonata BWV 1020, originally for flute and harpsichord, was probably written by Johann Christian Bach. The Sonata in F major, BWV 1022 is customarily played by violin and continuo (strings and/or keyboard, including small organ).

Awards: 4* by Le Monde de la Musique, 5 by Diapason

“Josef Suk here confirm he is one of the very few violinists of the XXth century to have emerged as a violist of great talent... The deep tone, full and sumptuously blooming of his instrument (one of the few made by Stradivarius) possess an incredible variety of timbres which will fascinate all amateurs of precious instruments.” (Diapason, June 1997)
