about

Edouard Lalo wrote Pablo de Sarasate on 1st November 1880: “You can believe me when I assure you that my Concerto russe is not unworthy of its predecessors; if it is true the others have nay value, the last one will take its place beside them; it differs in its colour, the result of the nature of the tunes I have made use of; the orchestration is as I hoped it would be and I am happy to have [written] works such different natures. According to one’s temperament, one might prefer the energetic expression on the Concerto in F, or the shimmering colour of the Symphonie Espagnole, or the harshness and melancholy of the Concerto russe. As I have the greatest confidence in your judgement, your refusal to play the Concerto russe gave me a terrible fright; I was afraid that I had perpetrated a bad or colourless work…” Unfortunately Sarasate was adamant in his refusal.

Awards : 5 by Diapason, 4* by Le Monde de la Musique

"Gérard Poulet plays this piece with the great purity of style we know. A perfect legibility, a blooming lyricism and a great mestria give to his interpretation, breath, energy and sensibility." (Diapason, January 1996)
