about

By the time he passed away in 1998, after four years of paralysis, Alfred Schnittke has become the most played and best known Russian contemporary composer of the last Century. The Choir Concerto, for mixed a cappella chorus, is written on excerpts from the 3rd chapter of the Book of Lamentations by Gregor of Narek, an Armenian religious writer. This Concerto is dedicated to Valeri Polyansky and his Moscow today Russian State Symphonic Cappella which gave the first complete performance on 9 June 1986. The Requiem came into being in 1975 as an off shore of another work (the Piano Quintet), which is dedicated to the memory of the composer’s mother, Maria Vogel.

Awards: Recommended by Classica, 5 by Diapason, 4* by Le Monde de la Musique, ClassicsToday.com

"The Requiem is a powerful work in which the mystery of death is magnificently depicted. The Prague Philharmonic Choir’s Quam Olim is appropriately ghostly." (Diapason, June 2000)

"The choral writing covers an extraordinary range of expressive means, from mediaeval chanted monody to the most complex modern polyphonies in 16 parts or more… The soloists and the Prague Philharmonic Choir offer highly contrasted interpretations of exemplary commitment." (Le Monde de la Musique, September 1997)"
