about

An amateur cellist, pianist and flutist, Borodin, the composer of "Prince Igor" was the only one of the Group of Five to have written some ten chamber works for his personal pleasure in keeping with the laws of Germanic rhetoric (to Balakirev's great displeasure). With undeniable brio and charm, the "Suite italienne" is one of several spin-offs from the ballet "Pulcinella", a "ballet with song" that Igor Stravinsky composed for the Ballets Russes. Finally, to close this program, Prokofiev's Sonata for cello and piano is the last chamber music work of the Russian composer. As often with him, the composition is a mosaic of tempos which highlight his almost cinematographic vision of music. The language of the sonata is sober, frank, not devoid of humor and enhanced by a Beethovenian romanticism.

Awards: Recommended by Classica, 5 by Diapason, 4* by Le Monde de la Musique

“Accompanied by Jaromír Klepáč, who revives perfectly the discourse, Michal Kaňka brings us a masterly performance of Rachmaninov’s Sonata Op. 19, the best since Rostropovitch / Dedioukhine in 1956.” (Le Monde de la Musique, January 2003)
